GLEE VIP Care; In Loving Memory of Roger

I was a hospital wellness director. I had developed and provided wellness, therapy, and senior fitness programs for hospitals, senior communities, memory care, rehab centers, and private clients, but it was Roger (one of my brothers) who was my first VIP Care patient. You see, a few years ago, he was diagnosed with late-stage cancer. I traveled from out of state to visit him in the hospital. I only planned to be there for a weekend, but on my second day there, his doctor pulled me aside and said, "What are you going to do with Roger? He can't go home alone; he'll need 24/7 care". With that information, I reached out to family members, visited care facilities, and talked with home care agencies, but I didn't find any good options. Long story short, I didn't go home. I spent the last months of my brother's life caring for him. He fought to live for as long as he could, and I was his steadfast soldier, confidant, and caregiver. I didn't realize it at the time, but during those months of providing care for Roger, I learned early on that with all the medications, treatments, hospitalizations, assortment of doctors, lab results, and ER visits that someone needed to be documenting everything in one place, as it was happening, and this is how 'Roger's Red Book' came to be. It didn't take very long before the doctors started asking if they could look at 'Roger's Redbook', because it was the only source that contained all of Roger's up-to-date medical information. A couple of ER doctors suggested that I should start a business providing 'Redbook' documentation for other families, too. However, documenting to the level of 'Roger's Redbook' wouldn't typically be possible. I was in a unique position as a sole family member who was the 24/7 caregiver for months. There weren't things that I wasn't there for, and I wasn't documenting after the fact like a data entry person would do. I was present for it all as it happened, and for some reason, I made a decision that I probably should document everything. It became extremely valuable on several occasions for medical personnel to have immediate access to medical information that I carried in 'Roger's Redbook'. Inadvertently, I was building what would eventually become the playbook for GLEE VIP Care. I learned firsthand that when you are caring for an aging, ill, or vulnerable person, the better documented history, medical, and lifestyle information caregivers have at their fingertips, the better advocates and caregivers they'll be.
